The Sceptre of Númenor was the emblem of the island's Kings and Ruling Queens, who wore no crown. It was probably made for Elros Tar-Minyatur, the first of them. Through the early centuries of the Second Age it passed from ruler to heir at an abdication, when the King or Queen laid the rule down and went into retirement, but from Tar-Atanamir onward that custom lapsed and the Kings held the Sceptre until they died. In the exiled realm of Arnor a sceptre again stood for royal authority, though a different one: the Sceptre of Annúminas, which had formerly been the silver rod of the Lords of Andúnië.
