Samwise Gamgee, called Sam, is the youngest son of the Gaffer, a hobbit who carries on his father's work in the gardens of Bag End and loves stories of the old days.
He lives with his father in Number 3 Bagshot Row on the Hill, both of them good friends of Bilbo and Frodo, and Bilbo has taught him his letters. Gandalf hauls him in by one ear when he is caught listening under the study window, and as punishment orders him to go away with Frodo, to Sam's tearful delight at the thought of seeing Elves.
