Samwise Gamgee
Samwise Gamgee is a hobbit gardener in The Fellowship of the Ring, son of the Gaffer and keeper of the gardens at Bag End, chosen by Gandalf to go with Frodo Baggins after being caught listening under the window.
Caught listening under the study window at Bag End, the gardener finds himself conscripted into The Fellowship of the Ring on the spot. Samwise Gamgee, called Sam, is the youngest son of the Gaffer, the old hobbit who has kept the gardens of Bag End for years, and he has inherited both the trade and the plain good sense that goes with it. Less common among hobbits is his other passion: Sam loves old tales, Elves, and anything from beyond the Shire's borders. When Gandalf discovers him eavesdropping on talk of Bilbo's ring, the wizard's punishment is exactly what Sam secretly wants: he is to go with Frodo. He sets out as servant and companion, torn between excitement at the thought of seeing Elves and homesickness before he is even out of sight of the Hill. His loyalty to Frodo is the steadiest thing about him.
