Rivendell

Tucked into a steep hidden valley at the edge of the Wild, the Last Homely House first welcomes travelers in The Hobbit. Rivendell is an Elven refuge west of the Misty Mountains, reached by winding paths that seem to find themselves, and its air carries the kind of peace that makes weariness fall away. Its master is Elrond Half-elven, a lord wise in lore and kind in counsel, in whose house the songs and histories of the Elder Days are still alive. Bilbo Baggins and the company of Thorin Oakenshield rest there on the eastward road, and the valley leaves its mark on Bilbo for good. In The Fellowship of the Ring the house of Elrond stands as it always has, a haven where Elves, Dwarves, Men, and hobbits alike find food, sleep, songs, and advice when they need them most.
