The Rings of Power are the Great Rings, the mightiest of the many Elven-rings made long ago in Eregion, and perilous, Gandalf warns, to any mortal who keeps one.
An old verse of Elven lore gives three to the Elven-kings, seven to the Dwarf-lords and nine to mortal Men, with one for the Dark Lord in Mordor to rule them all. Gandalf tells Frodo that a mortal who keeps one does not die but simply goes on until each minute is a weariness, and that dragon-fire is said to be able to melt them, though he knows of no dragon left whose fire burns hot enough.
