Rhovanion
Rhovanion, called Wilderland, is the wide region of northern Middle-earth east of the Misty Mountains in The Hobbit, holding the great forest of Mirkwood, the vales of Anduin, and the Lonely Mountain.
The map at the front of The Hobbit names the country beyond the Misty Mountains simply Wilderland. Rhovanion, as the loremasters call it, is the great region of the North between the mountains and the inland sea of Rhûn, with the river Anduin running down its western vales and the huge forest of Mirkwood filling its middle like a dark stain. Within it lie the Carrock, the elf-halls of the forest, the Long Lake with its town on stilts, and the Lonely Mountain standing alone in the north-east. It is a land of scattered peoples and wide empty distances: woodmen and river-folk, wood-elves, dwarves in their halls, eagles in the high places, and goblins under the mountains. Nearly all of Bilbo Baggins's adventure happens inside its borders, and The Lord of the Rings comes back to its lands and their troubles.
