Regions of the Shire
The four Farthings of the Shire and the lands beside them: Westfarthing with Hobbiton and Michel Delving, the pipe-weed country of the Southfarthing, the Marish in the Eastfarthing, the empty Northfarthing, and Buckland over the river.
The Shire is divided into four Farthings, North, South, East and West, whose borders meet at the Three Farthing Stone beside the East Road. The Westfarthing is the most crowded of them and holds Michel Delving in the White Downs, chief town of the whole land, along with Tuckborough and Hobbiton. The Southfarthing is rich farming country and grows the Shire's pipe-weed, the Eastfarthing runs down to the Marish and the farms beside the Brandywine, and the thinly settled Northfarthing sees the least traffic of any. Buckland, over the river to the east, belongs to no Farthing and is reckoned virtually a small independent country.
