The Dwarf colony Balin led out of Erebor into Khazad-dum between 2989 and 2994 of the Third Age, a few thousand settlers set on taking back the old realm from the Orcs that held it.
Between 2989 and 2994 of the Third Age, Dwarves out of Erebor went back into Khazad-dum. Balin, who had ridden with Thorin II, led them, a few thousand settlers of every age and trade. Dain II gave his blessing unwillingly, remembering what he had seen at Azanulbizar. Balin meant to recover the treasures of the old realm, the Ring of Thror among them. The company set out from Erebor with Floi, Oin, Ori, Frar, Loni and Nali, and fought its way inward from the Dimrill Dale, breaking the Orc-holds as it went.
