Plateau of Gorgoroth
At the heart of Mordor lay the ash-covered Plateau of Gorgoroth, a seared wasteland beneath Mount Doom where Sauron's armies mustered and his mines and forges laboured.
Gorgoroth was the great plateau at the heart of Mordor, in the northwestern part of the Black Land. Seared by the eruptions of Mount Doom and forever covered in its ash, it was a vast arid wasteland southeast of the Isenmouthe and Udun, bare of growing things save the brambles of Mordor. What brackish streams came down from the Ephel Duath and the Ash Mountains petered out or were caught in cisterns dug for the use of Sauron's armies, for whom the plateau served as mustering ground, mine, and forge. Men counted it uninhabitable, and perhaps nothing living could truly dwell there.
