Petty-dwarves

The Petty-dwarves, called in Sindarin Noegyth Nibin, were a small and unsociable people of Dwarves living in Beleriand in the First Age. They differed from other Dwarves in more than height. Where the rest kept their Khuzdul names and their language secret from all outsiders, the Petty-dwarves gave out their true names freely. They were the exiled remnant of several houses, driven out in ancient times, and they were the first of their kind over the Blue Mountains, raising strongholds in Beleriand before Nogrod and Belegost existed and before the Elves came there at all. Nargothrond and Amon Rûdh were among their delvings. The Sindar, who had never seen a Dwarf, took them for animals and hunted them, and though the mistake was put right once the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains made contact, the Petty-dwarves never stopped hating Elves for it.
