Peregrin Took, usually called Pippin, is one of Frodo Baggins's closest friends, a cheerful hobbit who helps him pack up Bag End and walks out of Hobbiton beside him by night.
Frodo goes tramping over the Shire with Pippin and Merry Brandybuck, and the two suspect he visits the Elves as Bilbo did. On the road east Pippin insists a heavy pack will do Frodo good, lags and yawns when he grows sleepy, and calls his cousin mysterious for keeping secrets after a strange black rider passes them by.
