Orthanc-stone
One of the seven Seeing Stones was set in Orthanc, the tower of Isengard, by the sons of Elendil in the Second Age, and rested there locked and neglected through Gondor's long decline.
Orthanc, the tower of Isengard, held one of the seven Seeing Stones from the Second Age. The tower was built by the Dunedain between the founding of the Realms in Exile and the war at that age's end, and the sons of Elendil, Isildur and Anarion, placed a palantir there. In later years Gondor's grip on the province loosened; the Key of Orthanc passed to the Ruling Stewards in Minas Tirith, and the stone rested neglected but safe in its locked tower through the long slow emptying of Calenardhon.
