The Narrows of the Forest are the waist of Mirkwood, pinched to eighty miles across by the indentation of the East Bight, where most of the forest runs a hundred miles or more from west to east.
The Narrows of the Forest are the waist of Mirkwood, the pinch made in the wood by the deep indentation of the East Bight on its eastern side. They lie in the south-central part of the forest, where the crossing measures only eighty miles from west to east, against the hundred and more that most of Mirkwood runs. During the Wars of the Wainriders, Easterling raiders came through the Narrows and up the Anduin into the lands of Forthwini, a lord of the Éothéod, and they did it often.
