Mount Doom
Mount Doom, also called Orodruin, is the Fire-mountain whose fire forged the One Ring, and only the Cracks of Doom in its depths can destroy that Ring.
Gandalf names it to Frodo by the hearth at Bag End, and afterward Frodo stares into the embers, dreaming of the dread of that burning peak. On its slopes, Elrond recalls, Gil-galad and Elendil fell in the last battle against Sauron, and Isildur took the Ring from the Dark Lord's hand there with the broken hilt of his father's blade, instead of casting it into the fire close at hand. At the Council, Boromir brings word that smoke rises from it again.
