Mount Doom
Mount Doom, or Orodruin, is the volcano of Mordor in The Lord of the Rings, the Fire-mountain in which the Dark Lord Sauron forged the One Ring, and the only fire in which that Ring can be unmade.
Of all the geography laid out in Gandalf's fireside lore in The Fellowship of the Ring, one mountain matters most. Mount Doom, called Orodruin, the Fire-mountain, is a volcano standing on the plain of Mordor near the Dark Lord's tower. In its deep furnaces Sauron forged the One Ring in secret, and the same lore is plain about the other side of that coin: no smith's fire nor dragon's flame can touch the Ring, and only the Cracks of Doom, the fire in which it was made, can unmake it. The mountain smokes and mutters in the east as the Dark Lord's power grows, and its glare reddens the clouds over Mordor. From the second chapter onward its fires burn at the far edge of every map and every plan, the one flame in Middle-earth with power over the Ring.
