Minas Tirith, the Tower of Guard, is Boromir's home city, and he takes a long, doubtful road from it to seek Imladris in the north.
At Rivendell, Elrond gives its history. Built as Minas Anor, the Tower of the Setting Sun, below the White Mountains, it takes its present name after evil things seize its sister city Minas Ithil, and the two have warred ever since across the ruins of Osgiliath. Its lords fight on, holding the River from the Argonath to the Sea, and its lord Denethor, father of Boromir, is master of its lore.
