Men

Men are the second of the Children of Iluvatar, waking far in the east of Middle-earth at the first rising of the Sun, long after the Elves had come into the world. The Elves call them the Afterborn, Atani in Quenya and Edain in Sindarin, and also the Strangers, the Nightfearers and the Children of the Sun, for Men are mortal where the Eldar are not. That mortality is named the Gift of Iluvatar: Men are not bound to Arda as the Elves are, and not even the Valar know where the spirits of Men go out of the world. Alone among living things they can shape their lives outside the Music of the Ainur, and of all the Free Peoples they multiply the fastest and spread the widest.
