Long-worms were either a kind of dragon of northern Middle-earth or another name Tolkien used for at least some of them. Like the other dragons of Arda they are taken to have come out of the pits of Angband. Only one long-worm is named anywhere: Scatha, the great dragon of the Ered Mithrin, whom Fram of the Éothéod killed at about the year 2000 of the Third Age. For a long while afterwards the long-worms were no threat to those lands, and whether Scatha was the last of his kind or others lived on was never set down.
