Legolas

Among the messengers gathered in the house of Elrond in The Fellowship of the Ring is an Elf sent from the forest kingdom beyond the Misty Mountains. Legolas is the son of Thranduil, the Elven-king of northern Mirkwood, come to Rivendell with tidings from his father's realm. When nine companions are chosen to go with the Ring-bearer, he stands for all his people, the one Elf of the company. On the road he is the eyes of the party, seeing far in dim light, and his bow is seldom off his shoulder. Snow that buries the others bears his weight so lightly that he walks upon its crust, and cold and distance seem to touch him less than any mortal companion. He carries as well an Elf's delight in trees, stars, and songs, and an Elf's sadness at fair things passing from Middle-earth.
