Legolas is an Elf in green and brown, sent to Rivendell by his father Thranduil, who rules the Elves of northern Mirkwood.
At the Council in the house of Elrond he brings unwelcome tidings: Gollum, held under guard by Thranduil's folk, has slipped away from them. On the road south, keen-eyed, he keeps the rearguard, and in Hollin he hears the very stones lament the Elves who dwelt there long ago. When the storm on Caradhras buries the others, he alone stays light of heart, running over the deep drifts in light shoes that barely mark the snow to scout the way ahead.
