Lalia (Clayhanger) Took

Lalia Took, born Lalia Clayhanger in TA 2883, was a hobbit of the Shire and the wife of Thain Fortinbras II Took. They married in TA 2914, and their son Ferumbras was born two years later. After Fortinbras died she became head of the Took clan and kept that place for the rest of her life. She grew so heavy that she could not walk and went about in a wheelchair, and she was widely known as Lalia the Great, or sometimes the Fat. Ferumbras never married, the reason given being that nobody wanted Lalia for a mother-in-law. In TA 3002 her attendant, Pearl Took, tipped her out of the chair into the garden, by accident or possibly not, and she died shortly afterwards. She does not appear on the published Took family tree, but Tolkien writes about her in Letter 214.
