Ithilien
Ithilien is the easternmost province of Gondor in The Two Towers, a green and fragrant land between the river Anduin and the mountains bordering Mordor, called the garden of Gondor and kept under secret watch.
Between the Great River and the mountain wall of Mordor lies the fairest ground in the south of Middle-earth. Ithilien is Gondor's easternmost province, a country of woods, streams, and terraced hills where thyme, sage, and flowering shrubs run wild, so sweet-scented that men call it the garden of Gondor. The stream of the Morgulduin divides it into north and south. Its position is its sorrow: no land of Gondor lies closer to the Enemy, and it is a borderland, its old houses and orchards left to the birds while soldiers of Gondor watch its roads in secret. The beauty holds even so. Travelers passing through Ithilien in spring find war and wilderness lying strangely side by side, ruin overgrown with roses.
