Hobbit families
The named families of the Shire and Bree, from the Bagginses of Bag End and the Tooks of Tuckborough to the Gamgees and the Ropers, with the three breeds, Harfoot, Stoor and Fallohide, that all Hobbits descend from.
Hobbits reckon themselves by family, and the Shire holds a great many of them. The Bagginses of Bag End are widespread and well off, with the Sackville-Bagginses and Chubb-Bagginses branching from them. The Tooks of Tuckborough hold the Thainship, and the Brandybucks, of Fallohide stock, founded Buckland and rule it from Brandy Hall. Working families keep to their trades: the Gamgees and the Greenhands garden around Hobbiton, the Ropers make rope at Tighfield, and the Hornblowers of the Southfarthing take their name from an old craft. Harfoot, Stoor and Fallohide are not families at all, but the three breeds from which every Hobbit comes.
