Hithlain is a fibre from the inner bark of the mallorn, spun by the Galadhrim of Lothlórien into elven rope: slender, silver-grey, silky to handle and far stronger than its thickness suggests.
Hithlain is a fibre taken from the inner bark of the mallorn, and the Galadhrim of Lothlórien spin it into rope. What comes off their hands is slender, silver-grey and light enough to coil small, silky to the touch and far stronger than anything of that thickness ought to be. Rope of hithlain does not fray, it holds a knot, and it takes weight that would part a hempen line of twice the girth. The Galadhrim hand coils of it out as a matter of course to travellers they have decided to help, along with the rest of their gifts, and few of the people who accept it understand at the time what they have been given.
