Hill-trolls

Hill-trolls stand taller and broader than Men, and their hides are a close mesh of horny scales that turns most of what is swung at them. They fight at close quarters and go for the throat of whatever they knock down. Some carry round black bucklers of enormous size and swing heavy hammers with them. The Coldfells north of Rivendell are hill-troll country, which is one of the reasons the wild land up there has been dangerous for so long and one of the things the Rangers of the North have always had to reckon with. Others live far south of there, in the mountains about Gorgoroth, where they take their orders from Mordor.
