Hildigard Took

Hildigard Took was a Hobbit of the Shire, a child of Gerontius Took, more commonly called the Old Took, and of Adamanta Took. Hildigard died young. Whether Hildigard was a son or a daughter has never been settled: Appendix C does not say, and while the name and its more usual spelling Hildegard are Germanic and female, The Hobbit gives the Old Took only three daughters, and Belladonna, Donnamira, and Mirabella are all accounted for. The name is built from hild, meaning battle, and gard, meaning enclosure.
