A great white pillar topped with a globe of crystal stood above the City of the Corsairs in Umbar, shining like a star far out to sea.
On the highest hill of the headland above the City of the Corsairs in Umbar stood a great white pillar, crowned with a globe of crystal that drank the light of Sun and Moon and gave it back like a star. In clear weather it could be seen far out to sea, and northward as far as the southern coasts of Gondor. Elendil's exiled folk raised it to mark the day in the year 3261 of the Second Age when Ar-Pharazôn landed at the Haven of Umbar, broke Sauron's power there and scattered his servants. It stood for the strength of Númenor and for the Dark Lord's humiliation, and the memory of that landing was kept with pride.
