The Great Eagles are mighty birds who range far and wide over the land, and the swiftest of them, Gwaihir the Windlord, carries Gandalf away from the top of Orthanc.
Eagles of the mountains carry word of what they see: wolves and Orcs on the move, the Nine Riders abroad, the escape of Gollum. In the elder days Manwe says the Eagles shall house in the mountains, and he sends their race to nest among the northern crags and keep watch on Morgoth. Their king Thorondor, with wings thirty fathoms across, carries Fingon up to the cliff where Maedhros hangs captive.
