Gollum
Gollum is a small, slimy creature who lives on an island of rock in a deep, cold lake at the roots of a mountain.
Gollum has two big round pale eyes set in his thin face, and they look like lamps and see like telescopes. Apart from them he is as dark as darkness. He paddles a little boat with his big feet hanging over the side, and never makes a ripple. Blind fish are his usual catch, snatched up as quick as thinking in his long fingers, and he thinks goblin good eating when he can get it.
His name comes from the horrible swallowing noise he makes in his throat when he says gollum. With no one else to speak to, he talks to himself, in whispers and hisses. Goblins seldom come down to the water alone, sensing something unpleasant lurking there.
