Glaurung

Glaurung is the first of the dragons of Middle-earth, bred by Morgoth in the deep pits of Angband and named in Sindarin the Gold-worm. The Silmarillion calls him the Father of Dragons. He goes on four legs and breathes fire, and he is not of the winged kind that comes after him. He first crawls out of the gates of Angband in the year 260 of the First Age, while the Elves keep their long siege about the fortress, and he burns the grass plain of Ard-galen and the settlements beyond it. He has not yet come to his full growth, and Fingon with his mounted archers is able to sting him back into the dark. Morgoth is displeased that he showed himself so early.
