By the end of the Third Age the wizard Gandalf was known throughout the Shire for his fireworks, which he sold or gave away on his visits and set off in quantity at Bilbo Baggins's birthday party. He made squibs, crackers, backarappers, sparklers, torches, dwarf-candles, elf-fountains, goblin-barkers, and thunder-claps, along with rockets that broke into stars of blue and green or into a rain of flowers, and set pieces shaped as trees and dragons. Every one was marked with a large red G and an Elf-rune, and there were hobbit children who took the G for grand.
