Gandalf
Gandalf is a wandering wizard and a maker of fireworks, an old man who comes to hobbit country only rarely.
Gandalf comes to Bilbo Baggins's door one fine morning with a staff, in a pointed blue hat and grey cloak, a silver scarf at his neck, his white beard reaching below his waist, and enormous black boots on his feet. He scratches a secret sign on the green door of Bag End, and at tea-time the next day thirteen dwarves crowd into Bilbo's parlour, for Gandalf has picked Bilbo to make the fourteenth member of their expedition. He also brings a map of the Mountain made by Thror, Thorin's grandfather, and a small, curious silver key that goes with it.
