Fellowship of the Ring
The Fellowship of the Ring is the company of nine companions formed at Rivendell, drawn from all the Free Peoples to go with Frodo the Ring-bearer on his errand.
Nine walkers set out from Rivendell. The Fellowship is the company chosen in the house of Elrond to go with Frodo Baggins, the Ring-bearer, on his errand: four hobbits in Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin; the wizard Gandalf; the Men Aragorn and Boromir; Legolas the Elf; and Gimli the Dwarf. Together they stand for all the Free Peoples of Middle-earth, nine walkers set against the Nine Riders of the Enemy. They travel light, in secret, and mostly by night, for their hope lies in stealth rather than strength. The company's road leads south from Rivendell into winter, marked by the trials of that road and the friendships forged on it.
