Faramir

Among the captains of Gondor in The Two Towers is a leader of rangers rather than armies. Faramir is the younger son of Denethor, the Lord and Steward of Minas Tirith, and brother of Boromir; his command is the secret war of Ithilien, where green-and-brown-clad men of Gondor watch the roads of the debatable land between the Great River and the mountains of the Enemy. He fights because his city must be defended, not for any love of sword or glory, and he says as much: war is a duty to him, never a delight. A reader of hearts and of old histories, grave, courteous, and clear-sighted, he weighs every word he hears against what he knows of lore and of men.
