Fairies was a hobbit name for the Elves, some said to dwell in the land of Faerie.
Fairies appear in hobbit-lore as a name for the Elves, some of whom were said to live in the land of Faerie. Rumour in the Shire claimed that long ago one of the Took ancestors had taken a fairy wife, and that Belladonna Took, one of the three remarkable daughters of the Old Took, descended from the fairies; something about the Tooks was, after all, not wholly hobbit-like. The name survives in family legend and in hobbit verse.
