Eriador
Eriador is the wide region of northern Middle-earth between the Blue Mountains and the Misty Mountains in The Lord of the Rings, containing the Shire, Bree, and Rivendell among lands mostly gone back to the wild.
All the walking in the first half of The Fellowship of the Ring happens inside one great country. Eriador is the land between two mountain walls, the Blue Mountains on the west and the Misty Mountains on the east, crossed by old roads and older ruins. The Shire sits in its north-west corner, Bree at its crossroads, and Rivendell in its eastern foothills. Once these lands were the realm of the North Kingdom of the Men of Westernesse, and their works survive as tumbled walls, dikes, and barrows among the heather. Now most of Eriador is empty, a quiet green wilderness where a traveler can walk for days between one inhabited place and the next, watched only by birds, beasts, and the occasional passing Ranger. Its emptiness is part of the mood: a wide land remembering more than it contains.
