Eorl the Young

Eorl the Young is lord of the Éothéod, a horse-people of the far north who dwell near the springs of Anduin, and the appendices to The Lord of the Rings name him the founder of the House of Eorl. He comes into his father Léod's place at sixteen. From that same year dates his hold on Felaróf, a wild horse of great strength who submits to him and will carry no other rider, and from Felaróf descend the mearas, the horses of the lords of the Mark. Eorl's folk are many and their herds are large, and the north has no more open land to give them. In the year 2510 an errand-rider out of Gondor reaches him with a plea for help against enemies from the east, and Eorl musters his riders and takes them south.
