The Elves were the first and eldest Children of Ilúvatar, considered the fairest and wisest of the earthly race of Arda.
Visiting Elves sits on Mr. Baggins's list of mad adventures, somewhere between climbing trees and sailing to other shores, the kind of thing he lays at Gandalf's door. Old swords forged in Gondolin by the High Elves of the West carry runes, and two of them are called Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver, and Glamdring, Foe-hammer. In the Great Goblin's mouth, friend of Elves is an accusation, made in the same breath as thief and murderer.
