Elendil

When Gandalf recounts the deep past, one mortal name stands beside the Elven-king's. Elendil of Westernesse is the lord of the Men of the West at the end of an earlier age, the tall king remembered as the Elf-friend, father of Isildur. In the great war of that age he joins with Gil-galad, last High King of the Elves, and together they lead the alliance of Elves and Men against Sauron in Mordor. Out of that war comes the Dark Lord's overthrow and the taking of the One Ring, the hinge on which all the history turns. In the North of Middle-earth Elendil's memory endures in old walls, old names, and old songs; among the Dúnedain he is the first of their line in Middle-earth and the measure of what their people once were.
