Edain
The Edain are the Men of the Three Houses in The Silmarillion, the first of the Secondborn to cross the Blue Mountains into Beleriand, where they enter the friendship and service of the Elven-kings.
Men enter the tales of The Silmarillion on foot, out of the East, following a rumor of light. The Edain are the people of the Three Houses, the families of the Secondborn who cross the Blue Mountains into Beleriand in the morning of their kind and there meet the Elves. The name, in the Elven-tongue, means simply Men, but usage narrows it to these houses, the Elf-friends: the house of Bëor, the Haladin, and the house of Marach, who take service and lordship under the Elven-kings. From that friendship they gain lore, craft, and honor beyond other Men, and they stand beside the Eldar in the wars of the age. The histories of the Elder Days follow their chieftains closely, and free Men of note in the long ages afterward, from the sea-kings of Westernesse onward, reckon the Edain among their fathers.
