A great treeless indentation in the eastern edge of Mirkwood, roughly square and some fifty miles to a side, made by the forestry of the Northmen.
The East Bight was no natural formation. The Northmen who bordered Mirkwood had hollowed it out over generations through forestry, leaving a roughly square clearing some fifty miles to a side in the eastern edge of the forest, at its southern end. Because of it the wood narrowed to less than a hundred miles north of Amon Lanc, and that stretch was called the Narrows of the Forest.
