Eärendil is a mariner of the Elder Days who wedded Elwing the White and sailed beyond the world's mists into the heavens, a Silmaril on his brow.
In the house of Elrond, Bilbo chants a long song of his own making about him, a seafarer who builds a swan-prowed boat with sails and lanterns of silver and arms himself like the ancient kings for his voyage. Aragorn insists on a green stone in the verses, and tells him that making rhymes about Eärendil under Elrond's roof is Bilbo's own affair. Elrond tells the Council that his sire came into the world in Gondolin before that city fell.
