Eärendil

One of the last tales of The Silmarillion belongs to a mariner in whom the two kindreds meet. Eärendil is born of the union of Elves and Men, joining the blood of the Elven-kings to that of the Edain, and the sea holds his heart from his youth. In the dark years at the close of the Elder Days he sails the wide waters in his ship Vingilot, seeking a way through shadow and enchantment to the West, to plead before the Valar on behalf of Elves and Men alike. His name endures through all the ages that follow. Songs of Eärendil the mariner are sung in the halls of Elrond in The Fellowship of the Ring, and his memory is honored among Elves and the Men of the West as one of the pivotal figures of the deep past, the seafarer of whom the loremasters never tire.
