Dwarves were a race of Middle-earth also known as the Khazâd (in their own tongue) or Naugrim, meaning "Stunted People", and Gonnhirrim, the "Masters of Stone".
Dwarves wear beards and are bigger than hobbits, who have none. Their New Year opens with the last moon of Autumn, on its first day, at the edge of Winter. A New Year's day on which that moon and the sun stand in the sky together goes by the name of Durin's Day. Thorin counts the Longbeards as the eldest race of Dwarves.
