Durin's Day is the dwarves' New Year, falling at the start of autumn's final moon on the edge of winter, at a time when that moon and the sun share the sky.
The day takes its name from Durin, whom Thorin names as his first ancestor and the forefather of the Longbeards, eldest of the dwarf peoples. Moon-letters on the dwarves' map, read by Elrond, say that at sunset on that day its final light will fall upon the keyhole of a hidden door. Thorin admits the dwarves can no longer work out when such a day will come round again.
