Dunland

Dunland is the country west of the Misty Mountains and south of the river Glanduin, near the gap between those mountains and the White Mountains. Its people are the Dunlendings, a race of Men, dark-haired and bearded, dressed in leather and skins, living in rough shacks of wood and hide, and fighting with clubs and other plain weapons. The name Dunland means Dark Land and was given by their northern neighbours after those neighbours settled the grasslands nearby; the Dunlendings' own speech is Dunlendish. Their forefathers lived in the forests on both banks of the Gwathló early in the Second Age, where the Númenóreans called them the Gwaithuirim and felled their woods for timber, and the hostility bred in those years has never left them.
