Dragons in Tolkien work more than one kind of magic. Dragon-talk is the sway a dragon's speech and eyes hold over anyone who answers it. Dragon-sickness, sometimes called dragon-spirit, is a greed for treasure, and worst for treasure a dragon has lain upon: it turns a reasonable person possessive, suspicious and unlike himself. When the peoples of Middle-earth first learned of such spells is not recorded, though it came after Glaurung appeared in Beleriand, and the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains most likely knew of them first, since they made masks said to turn a dragon's gaze aside.
