Dáin II
Dáin Ironfoot is a dwarf-lord in The Hobbit, ruler of Durin's folk in the Iron Hills east of the Lonely Mountain and a kinsman of Thorin Oakenshield, held in regard as a warrior and a ruler of sound judgment.
East of the Lonely Mountain, beyond wide moors and marshes, The Hobbit locates the nearest strong colony of Durin's folk. Its lord is Dáin Ironfoot, son of Náin, master of the dwarves of the Iron Hills and kinsman of Thorin Oakenshield. His people are miners and iron-smiths of great skill, and they are accounted among the hardiest of the dwarf-kindreds, well armed and well drilled beyond the custom of that age. Among dwarves Dáin's own name carries weight: a ruler of sound judgment, open-handed with his wealth, and a fighter of proven worth. He enters Thorin's story from its edges, for the fortunes of the exiled King under the Mountain concern all Durin's line, and the Iron Hills stand nearest of all dwarf-realms to the lost kingdom of Erebor.
