The Bywater Road ran off the Great East Road in the Shire, four or five miles out from the centre of the country, and carried on through Bywater and Hobbiton. It followed The Water for some fifteen miles before splitting into roads for Little Delving, Nobottle, and Needlehole. The Atlas of Middle-earth reckons its whole length at about thirty miles.
