Buckland lies east of the Brandywine River, hard against the Old Forest, home of the Brandybucks of Brandy Hall and their Masters.
Brandy Hall, by the Gaffer's account, is a regular warren, and in old Master Gorbadoc's day it held two hundred or so relations and a generous table. Frodo's mother came from the Brandybucks, and after his parents drowned boating on the river, so the gossip goes, he grew up among the Bucklanders until Bilbo brought him to Hobbiton. Its folk came into the Shire after most others, up from the south, and kept many peculiar names and words.
