Brethil

Brethil is a forest of the First Age in The Silmarillion, dense with beech and thinly peopled, lying at the north-western edge of the kingdom of Doriath. The rivers Teiglin on the west and Sirion on the east divide it from Thingol's realm, and it lies outside the Girdle of Melian, though Thingol keeps the lordship of it. When Men first come into Beleriand he gives them leave to settle there on condition that they hold it. The House of Haleth, called the Haladin, comes up from the lands of Caranthir by way of Estolad, and in the isolation of the woods they recover and grow. Their seat is Obel Halad on the hill of Amon Obel. Some of the Drúedain live in the forest as well, and the woodmen hold it against Orcs out of the north.
