The Silmarillion
A standalone book in The Lord of the Rings · by J.R.R. Tolkien
How it opens
Before Arda is fully shaped, Melkor makes war on the Valar, until the mighty Tulkas comes to help them and Melkor flees. Later Melkor slips back unseen, delves the fortress of Utumno in the north and throws down the two great lamps that Aulë made to light Middle-earth. The Valar withdraw west to Aman and make their home in Valinor, where Yavanna sings two Trees of silver and gold into being. In Middle-earth Aulë secretly makes the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, and Ilúvatar spares them but decrees that they sleep until the Firstborn awaken.
