Black Gate
The Black Gate, or Morannon, is the fortified northern entrance of Mordor in The Lord of the Rings, a wall and gate of iron and stone built across the pass of Cirith Gorgor between the mountain ranges.
Where the two mountain walls of Mordor draw together at its north-western corner, The Two Towers sets the Dark Lord's front door. The Black Gate, called the Morannon, is a rampart of stone and iron built across the pass of Cirith Gorgor, sealing the most direct way into Sauron's land. Two watch-towers raised in another age flank the pass, and the gate between them stands shut, opening only for the armies and errands of Mordor. No traveler passes it unmarked: the country before it is a desolation of slag, ash, and pits, and eyes watch every approach. In all the lore of the West the Morannon means the same thing, the point where the free lands end and the realm of the Enemy begins, guarded past any hope of forcing by strength of arms.
