Beleriand
Beleriand is a great region of northwestern Middle-earth in the Elder Days, the chief setting of The Silmarillion, where the realms of the Elves stand between the Great Sea and the Blue Mountains.
Most of the tales in The Silmarillion unfold in a country that no map of the Third Age shows. Beleriand is the great north-western region of Middle-earth in the Elder Days, bounded by the Sea on the west and the Blue Mountains on the east, threaded by the river Sirion running from the northern highlands down to the Bay of Balar. Within its woods and vales lie the storied realms of the Elves: Doriath under the protection of Melian, the hidden cities, the havens of the coast. North of it stands Angband, the fortress of Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, and Beleriand's history is shaped by the long war against him, fought under its stars and early suns. The Grey-elves name its lands and rivers, the returning Noldor build kingdoms in it, and the first Men to cross the mountains enter the histories there.
